Do you have tight hamstrings that may not be changing with stretching?
There is research to show that performing strengthening through the full range of motion of a joint can maintain and improve range of motion of that joint. One recent systematic review studied specifically eccentric motion and showed a significant improvement in flexibility in that motion direction.
What does that mean?
Eccentric motion is the portion of a movement where the muscle is lengthening as it is still under contraction (e.g. in a biceps curl, lowering the weight back down to the starting position).
Performing controlled repetitions through the full available range with an emphasis or focus on the eccentric portion of the movement can improve your flexibility! Meaning that you can have the best of both worlds of strength and flexibility.
The picture shows someone performing a stiff leg deadlift which can help improve hamstring flexibility and is something we frequently prescribe.
