If you read the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sport Physiotherapy, you will be excited to see a new publication this month - evidence informed treatment for low back pain!

Many people experience low back pain during their lives. The good news is that low back pain usually resolves within a couple of weeks or months. However, for some people, it can last for several months or years, sometimes going away for a while then coming back. Often, the cause of ongoing low back pain cannot be seen on magnetic resonance imaging or X-ray, which can be frustrating. The pain is still very real, though, and can have a real impact on a person’s life.

Here are the current facts!

1. Exercise is recommended for most people with low back pain.

2. Manual therapy is also recommended for both long- and short-term low back pain.

3. Education works best when combined with other forms of treatment like exercise and/or manual therapy.

The therapists at Physiohaus agree that exercise, manual therapy, and education are the best treatments for low back pain. Because each person's pain is different, with different impacts on daily life, treatment should be tailored to a person's unique symptoms, diagnosis, values, preferences, and goals.

When low back pain lasts longer than 3 months or comes back over time, many different types of exercise are helpful, including aquatic exercises; aerobic exercises such as walking, cycling, swimming, or dancing; and strength training exercises with weights, bands, or body weight. We also have a bias towards our exercise programs being fun and realistic!
